iPhone vs. Pre: Tale of the tape

Earlier, we began compiling a list of informative articles in regards to the Apple vs. Palm debate, the ongoing patent battle involving Apple's multitouch technology. With the release of the Pre nearing, more articles are focusing on side-by-side comparisons of the Pre and iPhone hardware; with detailed charts, webOS and OSX comparisons, and giving reasons why one should be better than the other.

While we may be biased towards webOS and the Pre, that shouldn't keep you from making an informed choice for your next handset. Below is a list of the articles (most recent first) that should be a valuable resource in sizing up these two smartphone heavyweights:

March

(Mar. 15)

February

CNET: Apple iPhone vs. Palm Pre - CNET Australia provides us with a good comparison of the two devices, first comparing the stability and user experience of OS X to the speedy multitasking and synergy of webOS. The iPhone however, has a huge head start in the form of the App Store. Palm will have to play catch up in that department. A full side-by-side hardware chart is also provided, which shows at a glance where each handset wins out. Their conclusion? "Palm Pre is our new tech crush, and it leaves the iPhone looking like an old maid. That said, there are so many variables and unknowns that could quickly shift our opinion of the Pre. Battery life...immediately springs to mind". (Feb 25)

Mr.Gadget: Why Apple needs to release the next iPhone soon - "The Best of CES 2009 that the Palm Pre received wasn't just because it looked good - this baby is also seriously jam-packed with some groovy functionality". Mr. Gadget also presents us with another chart comparing the two devices. The iPhone clearly wins on memory and screen size, but locked into a lengthy AT&T contract and lack of keyboard are its big pitfalls. On paper, the Pre has a better showing. (Feb 23)

The article gives a list of 10 things to love and hate about Apple's offering, then goes on to list 20 aspects of the Pre that should be looked out for. Overall, the Pre wins out but has a lot of unknowns that could spoil the party for them. Also, a possible $99 iPhone "lite" and updated 3G could make life a lot more difficult for the Pre. (Feb. 12)

(Jan. 14)

Gizmodo: Palm Pre vs. iPhone vs. G1 - An early article comparing three of the big players on several criteria such as multitouch, multitasking, and development platform. As expected, the iPhone and Pre go head to head on most categories, while the Android is left in a distant third. (Jan 9)
