webOS and Palm Pre snippets

altWith the exception of the recent Palm Q3 revenue shortfall and upcoming webcast, it's been a relatively slow week for the Pre and webOS. We've assembled articles from industry news and other goodies to tide you over until the bigger stuff arrives. Feel free to comment on any of the articles below.

  • Bloomberg: Pre to Win iPhone Users After Contracts: Roger McNamee, an outspoken investor and founding partner of Elevation Partners, makes the argument that the Pre will come at a perfect time to lure customers away from the iPhone; June 29 is the two-year anniversary of the first shipments of Apple's handset.

"Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone later...Think about it -- If you bought the first iPhone, you bought it because you wanted the coolest product on the market, Your two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they’re going to buy."

  • Official Palm Blog: Palm to support Patent Reform Act: With the Coalition for Patent Fairness, Palm is supporting a set of reforms to bring more predictability and balance to the patent system, so worthy inventions will be patented more quickly and inventors compensated fairly without the "threat of opportunistic litigation and disproportionate damages awards". Precentral notes that members already include Google, Dell, HP, Microsoft, and Apple. So it's unlikely to put out any flames in the ongoing patent dispute between the two companies.
  • Seeking Alpha: Dell Needs to Acquire Palm: With the recession sinking in, PC manufacturer Dell reported this week a 48% drop in profits and 16% drop in sales in Q4. In response, Dell said it would be "looking for acquisitions". The author makes an argument that Palm or RIM would be smart choices. RIM has a market cap of about $23 billion and trading around $40 a share, so is possible but not easy. Palm on the other hand, has a market cap of about $800 million (~$1.7B with takeover premium, clarified in a comment) and a stock in the $7 range, so would "be more affordable and lucrative". This would help meet "Dell's non-existent but urgent need for a credible smartphone strategy".
  • HD Tidbits (video): In case you missed them, you can watch the Meet Pre video (detailing the Synergy and calender features of the Pre) and an early promotional video by Palm, both with the HD treatment.
  • I'm an iPhone...and I'm a Pre (video): This one hardly needs explaining. Someone created a series of parody videos in the style of "I'm a Mac...and I'm a PC" but with the iPhone and Pre instead. The two handsets squabble over everything from docks to carriers to cut and pasting. Might be good for a chuckle. Vid 1, Vid 2, Vid 3, Vid 4, Vid 5

  1. I knew it was only a matter of time before the "I'm a pre" videos came out, pretty funny. I don't think Dell will try to buy Palm though, the investors might not like it too much. And I'd hate to have Dell logos all over my brand new Pre :-D
