Palm and Apple trade blows over iTunes compatibility with Pre

While the sparring between Palm and Apple over multitouch functionality may have passed over without incident, issues over iTunes compatibility with the Pre has come to the forefront of discussion between the two companies. Apple recently released an advisory warning, claiming that future versions of the software may break functionality with third-party devices that currently sync with iTunes (i.e. the Pre).

"Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players."

Palm responded soon after, reiterating the importance of webOS media sync (which currently allows synchronization of the Pre with iTunes), and suggesting other ways to stay connected, should Apple pull the plug. Spokesperson Lynn Fox statied in an interview with the Wall Street Journal today:

"Palm’s media sync works with the current version of iTunes. If Apple chooses to disable media sync in a future version of iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we could consider."

But even if Apple chose to break connectivity, issues with syncing with their own iPods could slow down the process, as the Pre identifies itself as one in order to connect up. It seems new Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein did his homework back when he worked for Apple. Also, Apple must consider that while Palm users would be supporting their software, iTunes compatibility could tempt music lovers away from iPhone hardware.

So what do you think, how much longer do you think the Pre will be an "iPod" in the eyes of iTunes? Regardless, it's probably a good idea to keep a Pre-compatible version of iTunes handy just in case.
